Rosemary is an evergreen, aromatic plant native to the Mediterranean region. The name ‘Ros marinus’ means ‘dew of the sea’, reflecting its origins. Today, rosemary can be found in many parts of the world. In 2020, it was reclassified into the genus “Salvia” and now bears the botanical name Salvia rosmarinus. It is a woody, aromatic shrub; with its needle-like leaves, it is often reminiscent of pine branches. Here in the Algarve, the flowering season begins in mid- to late October, when the worst of the heat has passed and dew begins to form more readily in the early morning hours. Wild bees are delighted that, after the long dry spell, the flowering season is now beginning again. Walking past the flowering shrubs, one can see them busily at work.

Rosemary has been used as a medicinal plant for centuries. In traditional medicine, various parts of the plant – such as the leaves, flowers and essential oil – were valued for their medicinal properties. Here are some of the health benefits and uses of rosemary as a medicinal plant:
