Lavender – The Scent of a Mediterranean Summer
Who doesn't think of summer, sunshine, and fields of purple blossoms when they think of lavender? Even here in the Algarve, we have a touch of Provence. In the shimmering heat, the scent of lavender hangs over the fields – it's harvest time! The lavender comes from certified organic farms in Messines. The lavender blossoms are harvested by hand, dried after picking, and later distilled in a copper still.
The Effects of Lavender Essential Oil
In ancient times, lavender was a popular bath additive; its name derives from the Latin "lavare," meaning "to wash." Lavender plants were burned in sickrooms, and the rising vapors kept pathogens at bay. Lavender essential oil can almost be described as a panacea. Among other things, it helps with respiratory illnesses, headaches, acne, burns, insect bites, rheumatism, and muscle aches. Lavender essential oil also has a positive effect on the psyche, helping with depressive moods, nervousness, and difficulty falling asleep.
Examples of Use
For nervousness or trouble falling asleep, add a few drops to an oil burner or place them on a tissue on your nightstand. For skin problems, prepare a 1-1.5% dilution with a good carrier oil such as olive or almond oil and apply it to the skin. Lavender oil can also be applied undiluted to insect bites or minor burns.
Precautions
Due to its sleep-inducing properties, lavender should not be used while driving or operating machinery. People with low blood pressure may feel drowsy while using the oil; if this is not desired, discontinue use. Do not use during pregnancy.
